To ensure durability and long-term performance. Below is a step-by-step guide to the process:
1. Planning and Design
- Assess the project area to determine the layout and design requirements.
- Consider factors like drainage, slope, and intended use of the space.
- Obtain necessary permits if required.
2. Excavation
- Mark the area to be paved and excavate to the required depth.
- For cold climates, ensure the excavation accounts for adequate base material to prevent frost heave (typically 12–18 inches, depending on soil type).
3. Soil Preparation
- Compact the exposed subsoil using a plate compactor to prevent settling.
- Remove all organic material and debris to avoid future shifts.
4. Base Installation
- Lay a geotextile fabric over the compacted subsoil to separate the base material and improve stability.
- Spread a layer of crushed stone (granular A or equivalent) as the base material.
- Compact several layers in increments to ensure a solid foundation.
- Ensure proper grading for water drainage (one inch per 8 feet).
5. Bedding Layer
- Spread a 1-inch layer of coarse stone dust evenly over the compacted base.
- Use screed boards to ensure a level and consistent bedding layer.
6. Laying the Pavers
- Start laying pavers from a corner or along a straight edge, following the design pattern.
- Place each paver snugly against the adjacent ones, avoiding large gaps.
7. Cutting and Edging
- Cut pavers as needed to fit edges and corners using a masonry saw.
- Install edge restraints around the perimeter to lock the pavers in place and prevent shifting.
8. Joint Sand Application
- Spread polymeric sand over the surface of the pavers.
- Use a broom to sweep the sand into the joints, filling them completely.
9. Compaction
- Use a plate compactor with a rubber mat to tamp the pavers into place.
- Compact the surface multiple times to ensure the sand settles fully into the joints.
10. Final Touches
- Sweep off excess sand and lightly mist the surface with water to activate polymeric sand, if used.
- Allow the sand to cure as per manufacturer instructions to lock the pavers in place.
11. Inspection and Maintenance Tips
- Inspect the completed surface for uneven areas or gaps.
- Educate the client on maintenance, including sealing the pavers for added protection and addressing any snow and ice removal considerations.
By adhering to these detailed steps, we ensure your interlocking pavers are built to endure the challenges of Canadian winters, providing a durable and visually stunning outdoor space for years to come.
